Jimmy Kimmel: Sen. Bill Cassidy 'Lied Right to My Face'

Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have introduced a bill that would turn the ACA into a block-grant program that gives each state funds to devise its own health-care system.

On Wednesday's broadcast of the Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends", Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) blasted the Graham-Cassidy Bill as "barely Obamacare-lite".

While the new bill does not allow states to waive the requirement that keeps insurers from rejecting people with preexisting conditions altogether, the waivers could end up allowing insurers to charge sick people drastically more money for coverage, essentially pricing them out of the market. Bill Cassidy's plan would actually cause ME to lose money.

Kimmel, who in May became an unexpected player in the US healthcare debate after his newborn son needed emergency surgery for a congenital heart condition, took aim at Senator Bill Cassidy, a medical doctor who had invoked the late-night TV host's name in touting the standards any Obamacare replacement would need to possess. The senator dubbed this qualification the "Jimmy Kimmel test." Instead of reimbursing states for most of the cost of caring for Medicaid recipients, the federal government would send states a per capita allotment with limited growth.

"Stop using my name, okay, because I don't want my name on it", Kimmel said. Okay? Cause I don't want my name on it.

For that reason, Kimmel said the bill not only failed Cassidy's original Kimmel test but also created a new one. It's called the lie-detector test. "So, this is not a repeal bill, this is sort of, 'Hey, we'll take Obamacare, replace it with Obamacare, but we're going to let the states have a little more power in how we spend it'".

Due to Senate rules, Senate Republicans are trying to pass a health care reform bill before September 30, after which they would need 60 votes.

Paul's decision to support "skinny repeal" but oppose Graham-Cassidy is more than a bit puzzling because Graham-Cassidy would repeal more of Obamacare than the "skinny repeal" would have.

For that monologue, Kimmel faced skepticism from critics who questioned - among other things - whether a discussion about complicated health care policy should be taking place on a late night show. As the month of September comes to an end, the U.S. Congress must reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides health insurance coverage for more than nine million children and pregnant women nationwide, including 350,000 kids in IL.
