Famed soul singer Charles Bradley dies at 68

A rep confirmed Bradley's passing on his official Twitter page, writing: 'It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Bradley. After undergoing treatment, he was given a clean bill of health and was back on the road earlier this year. He went on to release three albums for the label, including 2013's Victim of Love, and 2016's Changes, named for his popular cover of the Black Sabbath track. Calling himself "Black Velvet", he developed a James Brown impersonation act that he called "Black Velvet", which eventually got the attention of Daptones founder Gabriel Roth. Earlier this month, he was forced to cancel a string of live dates after the cancer returned and spread from his stomach to his liver.

Bradley was born November 5, 1948 in Gainesville, Florida. Bradley's career and life, which included a period of homelessness, was considered in Poull Brien's 2012 documentary "Soul of America". Performing to his limit in his 60s garnered him respect and acclaim. Mr. Bradley toured for a while as the opening act for the late Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, delivering his unique brand of soul, with lyrics that touched the heart and soul. As he told us in an interview a year ago: "When you look at the expressions on the people's faces, and you can see some of your own life in their faces and the changes that some people are going through".

Soul singer Charles Bradley has died at 68, his publicist said in a statement today. "It took 62 years for somebody to find me, but I thank God".

According to Bradley's rep, the singer died surrounded by family and friends, including members of bands he worked closely with throughout his career.
