Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie joins players for national anthem

Despite several of the 32 owners openly supporting Trump during and after his election - owners like Bob Kraft in New England, Shad Khan in Jacksonville and Bob McNair in Houston all donated millions to Trump's campaign or inauguration - teams across the league issued statements of support for their players and their right to protest. Ertz fumbled on the previous drive and the Giants wasted no time in tying the game as Beckham jumped and corralled the ball with one hand. While most of the team locked arms as the anthem was sung at Lincoln Financial Field, Landon Collins, Damon Harrison and Olivier Vernon each elected to kneel, the first such demonstration by a team that had heretofore stood together.

If the Giants' offense struggles for a third consecutive game, perhaps a change will be made. He's one of the most versatile players in the NFL. He's fired. He's fired!' Trump said. NY dropped to 0-3.

Defensive coordinators are often hesitant to blitz Manning (teams have sent an extra man just 15.4 percent of the time so far this season, which ranks 29 in NFL) in part because the veteran QB makes a lot of calls at the line of scrimmage, often after the defense has declared their intentions.

Their players chose to step up and be louder than they have in the past, joined in places like New England and Denver, where so many dozens of players knelt that firing them en masse would have resulted in forfeiture for not enough players to play.

Maclin underwent the standard concussion protocol after hitting his head on the ground during the second quarter, but the team announced after the halftime break that he had been cleared by doctors. We didn't play our best. We hold ourselves to a high standard in the building. People shouldn't have to choose. "It's not going to be one guy that'll do it". We've just got to stay balanced. We do know that, in light of them, this was a remarkable win.

All of the teams above have likely lost their chance at a postseason appearance, even this early in the season.

Again, the most American way of all is healthy dissent and constructive debate. "We know we need this game". Fighting over actual beliefs rather than just looking for a fight. "Any time we play the Giants up the street, the football Giants, we've got to put it on them". The hope here is yes, too.

Trump, a former owner of the New Jersey Generals of the old United States Football League, lashed out against NFL players who have chose to kneel during the anthem at games. Beckham, who would later add another score with another attractive catch, couldn't help himself on the first touchdown and picked up 15-yard penalty for his celebration. Such was the odd backdrop of a decidedly unsettled NFL Sunday, when actions on the field covered everything from politics to football, from the pregame to the final whistle.
