West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday congratulated former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on being re-elected the national President of the Samajwadi Party.

During the Samajwadi Party's national convention at Agra on October 5 the party unanimously re-elected Akhilesh Yadav as national president for a period of five years.

Ahead of the Samajwadi Party national convention in Agra, party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav has once again attempted to broker peace between the warring factions of the party.

Earlier, the Samajwadi Party chief had a tenure of three years but the party constitution was amended to extend it to five years.

While Akhilesh Yadav has maintained that he enjoys his father Mulayam's blessings, the latter had recently put a lid to speculations on forming a separate political party with brother Shivpal. He said that Akhilesh would leave for Agra from Lucknow by road in the morning and party workers will welcome him on the way.
