Theresa May caught by prankster during nightmare speech to conference

Business Secretary Greg Clark praised the "guts and grace" the Prime Minister showed during her nightmare speech to the Tory Party conference in Manchester.

Shapps also said this came from across the party, including those who wanted to leave the European Union, remain and those "somewhere in the middle" like himself.

May began her speech by talking about why she joined the party 40 years ago, highlighting that the things that have made her most proud have not been the positions held but "knowing that I made a difference - helped those who can not be heard".

May had proposed a price cap on the sector earlier this year, the biggest market intervention since privatisation nearly 30 years ago, but the plan was thrown into doubt after her ruling Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in an election in June. Under the party's rules, a leadership race can be triggered if at least 48 of those MPs express their support.

Grant Shapps has been outed as the leader of an attempted plot to bring down Theresa May following her disastrous conference speech.

British comedian Simon Brodkin, who uses the stage name Lee Nelson, handed May a P45 letter - a document given to employees when they leave their job - as she gave her speech to Conservative supporters.

The speech was also, at times, strikingly personal - May talked about her sorrow at not being able to have children and about her grandmother, who had been a domestic servant. "And they must be our focus", she will say, according to extracts released by her office.

Shapps said he had the support of about 30 MPs including five former cabinet ministers and suggested some cabinet ministers privately agreed but would be reluctant to back him because they were on the "payroll".

After her cough-packed prankster-stricken, set-crumbling Conservative conference keynote address, you might think there's little to link Theresa May and The West Wing's President Bartlet.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who goaded her in the run-up to the event with outspoken interventions on Brexit, gave May his full support in his speech on Tuesday.

Cabinet ministers however, have publicly rallied behind May since her party conference speech was interrupted by a prankster handing her a mock P45 and a persistent cough troubling the Prime Minister.

They are also terrified that another leadership contest could lead to a resurgent Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn winning power.

"I take responsibility", she said.

Rising star James Cleverly, who has admitted he would like to be prime minister one day, backed Mrs May.
