Another injury time victor from Harry Kane gave England the win but for most of the game they were crying out for the sort of creativity that we all know our Jack can produce.

Former England global Chris Waddle, commentating on the Slovenia match for BBC 5 Live, said: "I can't think of anything to say, it's that bad".

The in-form Kane had been quiet throughout a listless Three Lions performance but nudged home Kyle Walker's low cross to break the deadlock in the third minute of added time at the end of the second half.

"I can't remember Joe getting questioned too much until Pep went into Man City and started questioning if he could play on the floor".

Not a great watch tonight England but enjoyed that goal from Kane!

England have won all three of their previous encounters with Lithuania on the worldwide stage, scoring nine and conceding none in the process. 3-0 would have been harsh, we deserved the goal in the end but it was very hard.

When asked about picking Wilshere, Southgate said: 'We're in a position where there's no way we would dismiss any creative player.

And Glenn said while he accepted Thursday's Slovenia match "wasn't the prettiest of games", the side were still a work in progress. England has no one like Toni Kroos, Luka Modrić, Marco Verratti, Andrés Iniesta, Eden Hazard or N'Golo Kante who can dominate and control midfield (and that's just in Europe). This points the way for England to play over the next nine months.

No one can doubt England's consistency in qualifying for finals.

Enthusiasm for the national team continues to wane and Southgate has previously warned there is "no magic wand" to improve matters.

Match-winner and captain Kane described it as a dream come true after England stumbled to qualification for the World Cup.

Ironically just a few hours before the 1-0 win at Wembley, English FA chief executive Martin Glenn cited mental frailty has the root cause of England's recent failures at the business end of worldwide tournaments.

"We've qualified with a game in hand and we kind of take qualification for granted now", he said. For all his requests to play centrally, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appears best at wing-back.
