Confidence was low after last month's 3-0 loss in Spain but, despite winning only 3-2 in Skopje past year thanks to a stoppage-time goal, Italy was expected to easily sweep away Macedonia in Turin.

With Italy at serious risk of missing their first World Cup since 1958, the FIGC will be forced to do some laborious introspection should Italy struggle in their World Cup qualification playoff.

Such an eventuality could spell doom for a once-proud nation.

Coach Gianpiero Ventura warned Italy will struggle to even get past next month's football World Cup play-offs if they reproduce the woeful form of Friday's 1-1 draw with Macedonia in Turin.

Italy is now second in Group G with 19 points, just three points back of first-place Spain.

The Azzurri barely got out of second gear against stubborn visitors, but took a first-half lead through Giorgio Chiellini. I had moments that were positive and negative, like all coaches.

They were made to pay for their sluggish second-half display when Palermo forward Aleksandar Trajkovski lashed home in the 77th minute to claim a memorable point for Igor Angelovski's side.

"Losing in Madrid [3-0 to Spain last month] might have dampened our spirits but we can't just give up".

"There is still a game to play, then we'll tackle the playoffs".

"We're really frustrated. We are sorry for the fans, we understand them and we are as upset as they are, but I am sure they will support us when we need them", said Chiellini.

Italy's outfield players have elected to wear their white away kit for the game so that legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon can have the honour of wearing iconic Azzurri blue for the first time.

"I think Italy should never be jeered, as the team represents all of us", he added.

"We lacked that conviction and confidence that you always need on the pitch because that gives you the certainty in your movements".

"We put in a good first half performance, but the second was insufficient and unfortunately Macedonia got the equaliser".

Macedonia will likely sit deep and look to soak up Italian pressure, but the hosts should have more than enough to breach any rearguard action.
