California Fires: Current Conditions, Locations, & Acres Affected

Wildfires whipped by powerful winds swept through Northern California early Monday, sending residents on a headlong flight to safety through smoke and flames as homes burned.

Chief Scott McLean said there was no containment of the Atlas Peak fire at 12:30 a.m. and called the conditions "very volatile".

She caravanned with neighbors through flames before dawn as one of the wildfires reached the vineyards and ridges near her home. Brown said the fires threaten infrastructure, people and their homes.

Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Sonoma, Napa and Uva counties on Monday. Mandatory evacuations are in effect in several areas and almost 20 shelters have opened from Cloverdale to Petaluma and from Guerneville to Sonoma.

Butte County's LaPorte Fire, which began as the Cascade Fire in Yuba County, had scorched 3,000 acres as of 6:19 a.m. Monday.

The Nuns fire burning in Sonoma County north of Glen Ellen has torched 300 acres, according to Cal Fire. Cal Fire said firefighters were battling a 200-acre fire in Napa County. "There was smoke all over the area".

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports the fires burned into parts of Santa Rosa and the Sonoma Valley, destroying multiple homes in neighborhoods to the north and southeast of Santa Rosa early Monday. "Winds will continue to gust between 35 and 45 miles per hour with locally stronger gusts up to 55 miles per hour in the highest mountains".
