Local fire departments and emergency medical technicians took part in the event to teach children and parents how to react in case of a fire.

Running Oct. 8-13, National Fire Prevention Week was first proclaimed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, according to the National Fire Protection Association's website.

The department over the next three weeks will visit each elementary school in the city and present children with a packet of information that includes family activities created to promote safety with the theme "Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out", Fire Chief Jason Matthews said.

A home escape includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom and near all sleeping areas. "Within minutes, the intense heat from fire can cause severe, life-threatening burns; the dark, black smoke it generates makes it impossible to see through, and breathing can quickly become hard or impossible".

"Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory", stated Fraser Kirby, assistant chief of the Banff Fire Department, on the town's website.

The fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. "So our firefighters will go out and inspect the site, let you know about the burn policies and procedures".

"Practice it during the day and at night, with a designated meeting spot so all family members will know what to do", he said.

In an effort to maintain community outreach during the annual weeklong campaign, the fire union in town organized their own event, which they say will be "bigger and better" than open houses in the past as all efforts are focused on one evening.

It is observed on the Sunday through Saturday in which Oct. 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871, and did most of its damage Oct. 9.

The Detroit Fire Department's Community Relations Division will continue to install 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms in the homes of families that meet the criteria for the department's Smoke Alarm Installation Program. Also, practice using different ways out.

"You need to practice to see if it works for the oldest down to the youngest", Clark said. "And if you have to escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the way out". While it isn't clear whether those conditions contributed to the individuals' inability to escape or the spread of the fire, hoarding items can make it more complicated to plan escape routes, and also more hard for responding firefighters to get to you. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, roughly three-quarters of fatal fires occur in residents without a smoke alarm or working smoke detector.
