The fire, which broke out around 9:45 a.m., was burning about a mile from the recent Canyon Fire that eventually blackened more than 2,600 acres and took more than a week to contain.

The fire began close to the intersection of the eastward 91 Freeway and the 241 toll street. Officials haven't yet determined the cause of the fire.

Two High Schools are functioning as shelters for people, including El Modena High School, 3920 E. Spring St., in Orange; and Katella High School, 2200 E. Wagner Anaheim. Three regional parks - Irvine, Santiago Oaks and Yorba - were all closed due to the fire and smoke covering the area. Those who live south of Walnut Creek Reservoir should be alert, as they may need to evacuate should the fire reach their area. Children from Running Springs, Anaheim Hills and Canyon Rim elementary schools were also being bused over to Canyon High School. The westbound lanes were closed at the 241 connector, but later reopened.

Authorities are closing roads and the highways in the area, however - including parts of the 91, 55, and 241 - so your route to or from the parks might be affected.
