"It's possible we won't be able to make a deal, and it's possible that we will", he said. The Prime Minister reiterated Canada's commitment to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for the benefit of all three partners - Canada, the USA, and Mexico. Replying to a question, Trump said he would consider a trade pact with Canada minus Mexico, adding that both the U.S. and Canada wanted to protect their workers.

He was speaking at the White House with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said Canada was "braced" for Trump's unpredictability but taking a serious approach to the NAFTA talks.

Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico's president, has also called for the modernization of the 23-year-old deal.

Following the most recent round in Ottawa last month, negotiators said they had made progress on subjects such as telecommunications, competition policy, digital trade, regulation and customs and trade facilitation. Trudeau said he believed the Nafta talks could still end in a "win, win, win".

Prior to sitting down with Trudeau, Trump said it would be fine if NAFTA was terminated, although members of Congress expressed hope earlier in the day it could be reworked.

Trudeau told reporters in Washington DC that he agreed with the U.S. president that that the NAFTA trade deal needed to be revamped and that any new agreement needed to "give citizens opportunities to succeed".
