The 27-year-old is replacing Pierre Gasly, who is to take part in the final race of Japan's Super Formula series in which he is a title contender.

Hartley, the first New Zealander to earn an F1 drive since Mike Thackwell in 1984, added: "What an awesome feeling". Coming off of wins at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as last weekend's Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, the youngster should be a competitive temp for the team as he will accompany Daniil Kvyat in Austin, Texas, as Motorsport.com reports.

"What an awesome feeling!" said Hartley, who will fill the seat temporarily vacated by France's Pierre Gasly.

"COTA is a track I really enjoy and one I have raced at recently".

"I've got a lot to learn in one week but I feel ready for it, honestly".

New Zealander Brendon Hartley is expected to be drafted into Toro Rosso's lineup for a one-off appearance next weekend in Austin. I want to say a huge thanks to Red Bull for making this a reality, and to Porsche for allowing me to do this alongside the World Endurance Championship.

As a former F1 test driver for STR, parent team Red Bull, and Mercedes, Hartley chased the grand prix dream through 2013, but turned his attention to worldwide sports vehicle racing once it became apparent transitioning to a full-time ride was not in the cards.

I started to swim around him and he became a bit stressed and started to knock his head on the rocks. Hatheier told The ABC she may not have been so brazen had the shark been a bigger breed, however.

Less than a year later he began providing testing in Mark Webber's place after the Aussie had suffered an injury, and for the 2009 season was the official reserve driver for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

Hartley will partner Kvyat in the U.S., with the latter having regained a Toro Rosso seat due to Carlos Sainz's move to Renault being brought forward.

However, Hartley never got his debut as he was made to wait patiently as other drivers took seats above him.

Hartley also ran with Mercedes in a young driver test at Magny Cours in 2012.

"Brendon is coming as the reigning 24h Le Mans victor and he's also leading the current FIA LMP1 World Endurance Championship, which he won in 2015 as well", said Tost.

The New Zealander will be a popular addition to the grid in Austin, an opportunity which would have seemed like an impossibly long shot just a few weeks ago.
