Pakistan Monday won a key election by securing a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council when the General Assembly elected 15 countries to serve on the 47-member body. That is why the United States is leading an effort to reform the HRC, most recently through a ministerial meeting during UN General Assembly High-Level week, where more than 40 countries called for a more effective HRC.

The DRC will sit on the council from January 2018 for a three-year term alongside three other African countries elected at the same time namely Angola, Nigeria and Senegal. "As a newly elected HRC member, Ukraine will use all mechanisms to combat human rights abuses in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and in Donbas", spokesman for Ukraine's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Oleh Nikolenko told Ukrinform.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the election "yet another example of why the Human Rights Council lacks credibility and must be reformed in order to be saved". But that was still far about the 97 votes needed to win a seat.

He explained that this enhances the State of Qatar approach to the development of national legislation to promote human rights issues and affirms its commitment to the protection of human rights at the local level and recognizes its significant role and prestige at the regional and worldwide levels. Afghanistan, which got 130 votes, beat out Malaysia by a single vote for the fourth seat.

"Our victory is a manifestation of the global community's trust in Pakistan", Ambassador Lodhi said. "Pakistan wins by more than two thirds votes", she said.

Congratulating the nation on its diplomatic success, Maleeha said that despite opposition by the U.S. and her allies Pakistan had managed to become the member of the human rights council. "Pakistan's election gives the lie to those who claims that Pakistan is isolated", Maleeha Lodhi said.

The Council's membership is based on equitable geographical distribution and seats are distributed as follows: 13 seats for African States, 13 seats for Asia Pacific States, 8 seats for Latin American and Caribbean States, 7 seats for Western European and other States, and 6 seats for Eastern European States.
