North Korea is warning that the United States will face an "unimaginable" nuclear strike for conducting ongoing joint naval drills with the South Korean military on the Korean peninsula.

The USS Ronald Reagan, a 100,000-tonne nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, patrolled in waters east of the Korean Peninsula on Thursday in a show of sea and air power.

"The United States has gone mad by putting under our noses targets that we have set as primaries".

"This shows that the United States and its puppets (in reference to South Korea) are preparing for a "pre-emptive strike" against North Korea, he added".

Other statements released by North Korea over the last day include: "The rabid man in the White House ... will first face the enormous volley of nuclear fire if he hopes to settle (this) confrontation with nukes".

The US Navy's biggest warship in Asia, with a crew of 5,000 sailors, sailed around 100 miles, launching nearly 90 F-18 Super Hornets from its deck, in sight of South Korean islands.

"The unsafe and aggressive behavior by North Korea concerns everybody in the world", Rear Admiral Marc Dalton, commander of the Reagan's strike group, said in the carrier's hangar as war planes taxied on the flight deck above.

"The goal of these operations are to send signals that we know how to operate together in the defense of South Korea and to make it clear that aggressive actions that violate the sovereignty of our allies [will not be tolerated]".

The annual exercises the USA and South Korean navies conduct in the spring and summer are usually held in the Sea of Japan, east of the peninsula.
