Former FBI Director James Comey, who has cultivated a low public profile since his surprise firing last May, confirmed Monday that he is the author of a Twitter account that was previously anonymous - and signaled that he is going to rejoin the national conversation. The feed earlier Monday included a picture that appears to show Comey standing on a highway in Iowa. He is, however, writing a book about his Federal Bureau of Investigation career and leadership and ethics, as his tweet plainly states: "Gotta get back to writing". The author of the post promised to "try to tweet in useful ways".

The photo is simple, showing Comey in running shoes with the message "Goodbye Iowa".

Comey has re-appeared after months of seclusion.

Comey's Twitter account was launched in March after he was sacked by President Trump.

Speculation that Comey was on Twitter has been building since March. In college, Comey wrote his senior thesis on Reinhold Niebuhr, an influential 20th century American theologian and social thinker. That's incredible! - alongside a link to the FBI's jobs website.
