Amazon Counters Walmart Delivery with New "Amazon Key"

"Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors", said Peter Larsen, vice president of Delivery technology for Amazon.

Amazon officials must have guessed people might be apprehensive about letting strangers in when they're not home because the company is rolling out a bundle of security features with its new service. No access codes or keys are ever provided to delivery drivers. Amazon verifies that the package (s) belong to the address and the driver is near the door, turns on Cloud Cam and unlocks your door.

While designed for delivery, Amazon Key has the potential to double as a device for home security, because the camera includes night vision and two-way audio capabilities. Then again, Amazon also touts the joy of allowing pet sitters and dog walkers to access your home with the smart lock.

"Amazon Key is perhaps the most outre example of this phenomenon yet", Emba wrote.

Those kits start at $250.

The e-retailer hopes to give its customers a safe and secure way to receive packages when they are unable to accept them in person.

Butler was pretty adamant in her rejection of the very idea of opening her home to a stranger delivering a package, but after explaining how Amazon says it will work, she's all for it.

The cloud camera would allow customers to remotely watch the delivery and other entries into the home as they are taking place.

The Amazon Key help pages answer more questions, including whether to use Amazon Key if you have a pet with access to the front door, or aren't comfortable shutting off your security system on delivery day.
