In a statement issued to Variety, Rodriguez writes: "As one of the first victims to come forward with stories of sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein, Rose McGowan is a very courageous woman who I applaud for speaking out about Weinstein's repulsive behavior".

Rodriguez dated McGowan from 2006 to 2009 and cast her as the female lead in the 2007 film, released via Weinstein's brother Bob's Dimension Films, part of the Miramax and Weinstein Company family.

To cheers from the crowd, McGowan said: "I've been silenced for 20 years, I've been slut-shamed, I've been harassed, I've been maligned, and you know what I'm just like you because what happened to me behind the scenes happens to all of us in this society and that can not stand and it will not stand".

The "Charmed" actress said she initially responded to the offer, which required her to sign a nondisclosure agreement, by asking for $6 million instead, but quickly asked her lawyer to withdraw the counter. While speaking with the Times, McGowan said she thought she could at least get $3 million out of the producer. He died eight years ago.

McGowan had previously reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein after a hotel room incident in 1997 during the Sundance Film Festival.

Shortly before the rash of allegations against Weinstein came out, he offered McGowan $1 million to keep quiet about her own story.
