The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization, released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.

MI ranks 36th in the country for percentage of "A" hospitals - only 19 of the 77 hospitals in the state were given an A. Just one received a "B", one a "C", three a "D" and two an "F". The fact that hospitals overall haven't improved performance in the last five years might be because they are inundated with many other kinds of public surveys and reports that also evaluate their performance, said Francois de Brantes, vice president and director of the Center for Payment Innovation at the Altarum Institute.

Binder said states with consistently good hospital grades show a state-wide, collaborative commitment to patient safety.

The Blue Ribbon Expert Panel selected 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data, analyzed the data and determined the weight of each measure based on evidence, opportunity forimprovement and impact.

The highest number of "A" graded hospitals were found in Texas (77 out of 210 hospitals), followed by California (74 out of 265) and Florida (53 out of 174). Rhode Island had the most dramatic improvement, jumping from 50th in 2012 to number one in the fall of 2017. "At the very least, everyone should get an A on patient safety". This puts Maryland near the bottom of Leapfrog's bi-annual state rankings analysis, in which states are ranked according to the percentage of "A" hospitals.

Here's what NJ can expect from the powerful coastal storm
Winds of this strength can take down trees and subsequent power lines which means you should plan on power outages. Additionally, flooding along rivers, including the Black River, Moose River and Salmon River, is also possible.

Maryland was included in the state rankings for the first time, as prior to this most recent report it was exempt from reporting several safety measures on a national level.

The report card assigns A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide and provides the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S.

Conemaugh Memorial in Johnstown and UPMC Bedford received the top grade of "A" for fall 2017.

"Errors and infections in hospitals are the third leading cause of death in America, and people deserve to know which of their hospitals are best at preventing them", said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog.
