Okafor asks Sixers for buyout

After the team opted not to exercise his fourth-year option, Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor said he wanted his time in Philadelphia to come to an end.

The third pick of the 2015 draft can't get on the floor, playing in just one of the 76ers' first seven games, in which he scored 10 points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes, and watching Philadelphia's storied "Process" play out with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid without him.

Okafor, who has been the subject of numerous trade rumors over the past two seasons, has played in just one game this season. "Because he said he would be giving me away to a team for free".

Okafor called it "fine" that he's out of the rotation, but was adamant about wanting to play elsewhere. The team looks great and I'm not a part of that.

Okafor spoke to reporters about the decision fort he first time Wednesday, and he summed up his own unfortunate situation. "I had a talk with [team president] Bryan [Colangelo] yesterday, just because I want to play".

Okafor's injury history and the perception that he is a defensive liability have a lot to do with why the Sixers have been unable to move him.

"Honestly, I didn't want them to pick up my option", Okafor said, per Camerato.

Okafor said that after the Sixers declined his option, he told president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo he would like a buyout. "But that's where we stand today because you waited so long to trade me".

If he is not bought out or traded, Okafor, 21, will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Alternatively, the Sixers, as Okafor said Colangelo mentioned, don't want to just buy him out and trade returns likely aren't very promising right now. But Okafor said the team has not engaged with him on that possibility.

Last season, he found himself in a logjam at center, with the emergence of Embiid as a burgeoning superstar and both Holmes and Nerlens Noel on the roster (though Noel would eventually be traded).
