The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled various makes and models of Kidde fire extinguishers with plastic handles.

The nozzle can also detach with enough force to be risky.

More than 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers are being recalled because they may not work during a fire.

The recall involves 134 models made between 1973 and August of this year.

Also included in this recall are the 4.6 million fire extinguishers recalled in 2015 after 11 reports of the devices failing to discharge fully and the 167,000 recalled in 2009 recalled when the pressurized cylinder could lose pressure.

Faults include the extinguisher becoming clogged, failing to spray and the nozzle flying off with such force it can cause injury. The products were sold at many stores, including The Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon.com and others. If that happens, the extinguishers might not work during an emergency. Kidde settled with the family.

Kidde is recalling two styles Plastic handle and plastic push-button fire extinguishers. Sixteen of those incidents resulted in injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, the CPSC said.

The recall affects between 37 and 38 million extinguishers in the US made from 1973 to this past September. Or you can call the company at (855) 271-0773.

Owners should contact Kidde to ask for a free replacement and for instructions on how to return recalled models.

For units produced in 2007 and beyond, the date of manufacture is a 10-digit code printed on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom.
