White House slams both Bush presidents after their criticism of Trump revealed

It's a breach of etiquette by a former president, but George H.W. Bush did not mince words when describing Donald Trump.

"I don't like him", the elder Bush told Updegrove in May 2016 before the elections in November of that year, according to excerpts of the book obtained by AFP. "And I'm not too excited about him being a leader". And if you talk to those around him, they have confidence in his leadership.

When Updegrove asked the former president what he thought Trump's goals might be in running for president, Bush said Trump had "a certain ego".

"Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush", H.W. Bush told the author Mark Updegrove in 2016 that he doesn't like Trump.

George Bush Sr and Jr, two former United States presidents, have never liked Donald Trump, and now they have gone on record with their blunt assessment of him, calling him a "blowhard" who doesn't know what it means to be the president of the country.

CNN reached out to both former presidents' offices for further comments and they both confirmed that they had spoken with Updegrove on the record, but as a policy do not comment on books. It also highlights ideological divisions within the Republican Party.

Who did the former presidents vote for in 2016?

It really was no secret that the Bushes aren't really big fans of President Donald Trump. Bush confided to the author, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president". "Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not", Updegrove told CNN's Jamie Gangel.

George H.W. Bush confirmed that he voted for Hillary Clinton and his son said he left the top of his ballot blank.

That inspired the title of the book - which will be published November 14 by HarperCollins - as a quote that seemed to carry a double meaning.

The younger Bush, meanwhile, was skeptical about then-candidate Trump's chances in a race in which his younger brother Jeb was an early favorite.

Updegrove said the title of the book came from a conversation he had with the junior Bush in which he said, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president". But George W. Bush's parents were clearly disturbed by the influence of Vice President Dick Cheney and neoconservative advisers. It reminds one of that old joke of a more genteel time in which the most offensive thing one could say to someone was a forceful "good day!"...and if that didn't work, a follow-up of "I said, good day, sir!"
