In numerous media interviews in recent months, the adviser, Carter Page, has either denied meeting Russian government officials during a July 2016 trip to Moscow or said he met "mostly scholars", the newspaper said.

Papadopoulos said in the email that he was acting "to arrange a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss U.S. -Russia ties under President Trump", court records indicate.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its probe of Moscow's meddling in last year's election, special counsel Robert Mueller announced Monday.

But the chairman of Trump's national security team, then Alabama senator and now attorney general Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to a person in the room. "As far as Sessions seemed to be concerned, when he shut down this idea of Papadopoulos engaging with Russian Federation, that was the end of it and he moved the meeting along to other issues".

"I did not, and I'm not aware of anyone else that did, and I don't believe it happened", Sessions said.

Reported testimony from former campaign policy adviser Carter Page only adds to questions about what Sessions knew. But on Thursday, the person familiar with Sessions' recollections said, "the attorney general has no clear recollection of this person". "If I were Sessions, I wouldn't have recalled it either". He later told CNN's Jim Sciutto the Russian official's name.

"Once again, developments in the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election have brought to light evidence that you failed to tell the truth about your interactions with Russian operatives during the campaign", Franken wrote in a letter to Sessions on Thursday in which he asked the attorney general to clarify his accounts to the Senate.

A source at the Department of Justice confirmed to HuffPost that Sessions spoke out against the idea.

Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. "There were questions that elicited exactly the kind of information that the Papadopoulos plea agreement made".
