Rockford police officer dies following traffic stop

The Rockford Fire Department tweeted a statement saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Officer Cox".

Rockford Police escorted Cox's body from Saint Anthony Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, to the Winnebago County coroner's office shorty after 6 a.m.

A police officer in IL was apparently shot dead during a traffic stop early Sunday, authorities said. "Continue supporting us, pray for Jaimie, pray for his wife, pray for his family, and pray for us as we get through this hard time". A short time later, police say the officer made a brief radio transmission indicating he needed assistance. Inside the vehicle, investigators tell 23 News a body was found. Responding officers found Cox at the scene of the crash two blocks away, and he died at a hospital.

Around 1:20 a.m., Rockford police posted on Twitter and Facebook that the department was "on scene of a shooting involving an officer". He served in the United States National Guard and was a graduate of Hononegah High School and Northern Illinois University. He previously worked as an officer with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, according to O'Shea.

Roads are blocked off in the area and police are not letting anyone through the perimeter they have setup. Chief Dan O'Shea has not said if the officer died of a gunshot wound.
