President Donald Trump warned today that "no dictator" should underestimate the USA, as he launched an Asia tour that will be dominated by the North Korea nuclear crisis.

"The relationship is really extraordinary".

Speaking to hundreds of cheering USA and Japanese troops at Yokota Air Base, just west of Tokyo, Mr Trump said: "No dictator, no regime, no nation should ever underestimate American resolve".

The low-key agenda was a prelude to the formal talks, a press conference and state dinner planned in Tokyo Monday. Trump dubbed Abe and Matsuyama "wonderful people", while Abe called it a "round of golf with a marvelous friend".

He said there was a "great probability" that the two leaders would discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula if they met.

"We're in the midst of having very major discussions on many subjects, including North Korea and trade and we're doing very well", Trump told reporters in front of a restaurant in Tokyo alongside Abe. Abe and Trump will meet families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

Trump, who is on a 12-day trip, is to speak to USA and Japanese forces at Yokota air base shortly after arriving in Japan on Sunday and looked to stress the importance of the alliance to regional security.

"From the point of view of Abe administration, the personal chemistry that exists between the two leaders is seen as an asset", said Mireya Sollis, chair in Japan Studies for the Brookings Center for East Asia Policy Studies.

"What's inflammatory is the North Korean regime and what they're doing to threaten the world", McMaster said.

Though Trump did not mention North Korea by name during the speech, the spectre of its weapons program will loom large throughout Trump's five-nation Asia trip.

Mr Trump has delivered harsh denunciations of the renegade North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, belittling him as "Little Rocket Man" and threatening to rain "fire and fury" on his country if the belligerence continues.

"The president will use whatever language he wants to use, obviously", McMaster said.

Speaking to reporters on the plane, he announced he would likely be meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin during the tour, as the global community scrambles for a solution to the North Korean crisis.

Each service member embodies the warrior creed, Trump said, adding their devotion, prowess and expertise comprise the US military as the fiercest fighting force in world history.

Trump told Fox News this week that it was possible he would meet Putin during his Asia trip.
