Even as Iger played down talk of Disney's streaming platform aiming to be a "Netflix killer", calling the company "a good partner of ours", he made his goals for content quite clear.

Robert Iger, chief executive of Walt Disney Co, also revealed details of the first shows that will be released. In addition, fans can expect a live-action Star Wars show, an unnamed Marvel series, and shows based on Monsters Inc. and High School Musical. Plus, it's highly unlikely Disney would be willing to roll the dice on R-rated superhero fare like Deadpool and Logan, so a little diversity obviously isn't a bad thing here. I can't get specific with you yet, because we haven't determined it yet.

When Disney's CEO announced Disney's standalone streaming service, he also confirmed Marvel and Star Wars titles will be exclusive to the platform: "I have described a very rich, treasure trove of content for this app", he said, according to CNBC.

While this would certainly seem like fighting talk created to lure consumers over to Disney in favour of Netflix, Iger concedes the lower price "is in part reflective of the fact it'll have less volume", given it will be exclusively streaming content produced by Disney themselves.

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on "The Last Jedi, ' " Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement". But it'll simply launch with less volume, and the price will reflect that.

For the quarter ended September 30, Disney reported earnings of $1.07 a share, excluding some items, missing the $1.14 average of analysts' estimates.

The service is set to launch in 2019.

What's more, it's been revealed that Disney had set its sights on the rival studio not just to complete their Marvel Cinematic Universe, but rather to also acquire the massive library of original programming put out by Fox's TV arm.
