"USS Nimitz (CVN 68), and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) strike groups will commence a three-carrier strike force exercise in the western Pacific, Nov. 11-14", the United States 7th Fleet announced on Nov. 8.

Also on Saturday, the United States and South Korean navies launched four days of joint drills off the east coast of South Korea.

Xi urged South Korea to take a "responsible attitude on THAAD that stands the test of history", adding that it would be "new beginnings and a good start".

Trump's rhetoric combined with repeated weapons tests by North Korea have increased tensions to some of the highest levels seen since the Korean War of 1950-1953.

The exercises will also involve 11 U.S. Aegis ships and seven South Korean naval vessels, including two Aegis ships.

The drill is also in response to North Korean nuclear and missile provocations, the South's military said, and to show any such developments by Pyongyang can be repelled with "overwhelming force".

A USA lawmaker has submitted a resolution to the House of Representatives calling on both South Korea and the U.S.to send a clear message to North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

The U.S. and South Korea kick-off a landmark operation in the Western Pacific.

The deployment of the three nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the region comes amid a visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Asia.

"Multiple carrier strike force operations are very complex, and this exercise in the Western Pacific is a strong testament to the U.S. Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region".

The drills are reportedly the first of their kind since the three carrier strike groups conducted the Valiant Shield exercise off the coast of Guam in 2006 and 2007.

It has repeatedly threatened to launch ballistic missiles into the waters around the US territory of Guam.

In his speech before South Korea's National Assembly Wednesday, Trump told North Korea: "Do not underestimate us, and do not try us".
