Butch Jones fired by Tennessee

The Butch Jones era is over after five seasons in which he restored Tennessee's program to respectability, only to watch it regress this year after back-to-back nine-win seasons.

But losing to Missouri in Columbia, a team that Tennessee defeated 63-37 last season, was all athletic director John Currie could stand and everyone involved with the Vols football program could stand no more.

Coming off a 50-17 loss to Missouri on Saturday, UT has chose to part ways with Jones after four-plus seasons. But down the stretch the Vols went 3-4 to close out the regular season, with a loss to SC off the bye week that ended chances of making it to the SEC Championship Game.

"An exhaustive search is underway for a person of the highest integrity and character with the skills and vision to propel Tennessee to championships", Currie said.

Jones was under contract through February 2021. Butch Jones is out, and Brady Hoke will finish out the year calling the shots for the Vols. Because Jones was let go without cause, he will be entitled to be paid a buyout of $8,257,580.00, unless there are any deals between the two sides to agree to a reduced buyout.

Tennessee started the season 3-1 but has lost five of its last six games.

In his time with the Vols, Jones was 6-17 against ranked opponents and 0-7 against Top 5 foes. All of Jones' assistants are under contract through next season. When was this team going to overtake the competition in the SEC East, finally defeat Alabama, win a conference championship and be in the College Football Playoff discussion?

Tennessee last won an SEC championship in 1998, the same year the Vols won the national championship with an unbeaten 13-0 record.

Jones' resume in Tennessee is more impressive than you might expect with the way the fans have run him out of town. Tennessee hasn't won a SEC East title since 2007 when Phillip Fulmer was in his next-to-last season.

When making the next hire, though, Currie said money will not be an issue. He also coached at Ball State and San Diego.

Regardless of preseason projections, a 4-6 overall record and 0-6 mark in the SEC was not what anyone wanted to see in Knoxville.
