Krishna river boat tragedy: Locals rushed to rescue

"For more than an hour, no one tried to pull the people stuck under the tourist boat", an eye-witness said.

Local fishermen and locals of Ibrahimpatnam jumped into the flowing waters of Krishna river and rescued the passengers from the tourist boat which capsized on Sunday.

Rajappa also announced an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh to each of the families of the deceased.

Survivors said they boarded the private boat as the boats of the Tourism Department were not available. As many as 20 passengers, who were wearing life jackets, managed to swim to the shore safely.

National Disaster Response Force personnel were pressed into service to launch rescue operations, but these were hampered with the sunset.
