"This is the irrefutable evidence that there is no struggle against terrorism as the whole global community believes", the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook along with photos. The images were from the game AC-130 Gunship Simulator, available for iOS and Android.

The ministry said Russian air power had supported Syrian troops in freeing the town of Abu Kamal from Isis, and that "facts of direct cooperation and support provided by the US-led coalition to the ISIS terrorists" came to light during the operation. As you'd expect from someone caught with their trousers down, the original tweets and Facebook posts have since been deleted, but once you post something on the Internet it's there forever.

The ministry posted a number of aerial images that it claimed were of ISIS convoys, It said the USA intervened to "use (ISIS) to promote American interests in Middle East".

CIT said one photo was taken from a mobile game called AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron, and others were screenshots of videos released by the Iraq Ministry of Defence in 2016.

Commenters picked up the fact that the Russian MOD published a video from a video game and subsequently mocked the mistake. In the top-right corner, you can see the beginnings of the statement from the video that claims the footage shown was work-in-progress gameplay and that all of the content shown is subject to change.

Hours later, the ministry published an updated statement with a different set of images, which it also said proved their claims.

It said the US-led coalition refused requests to cooperate and "eliminate fleeing Isis convoys".

"The United States' refusal to carry out strikes against ISIL terrorist convoys retreating from [Al-Bukamal] is a fact recorded in the transcripts of the talks and, therefore, well known to the American side, just as the active counteraction by USA aircraft to the Russian Aerospace Forces, which were ready to destroy ISIL terrorists who were regrouping for new attacks against government troops near [Al-Bukamal]", the ministry added, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.

U.S. military spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon called the Russian statements a "barrage of lies", saying they were "as accurate as their air campaign".
