Muhammad, who ranked among Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2016 and has gone on to start a line of clothing, Louella, for the modest fashion industry, said the new doll means the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

Ms Muhammad, part of the USA fencing team and the first American to compete at the Olympics while wearing a hijab, won a bronze medal in fencing at the 2016 Rio Games. After becoming the first US Olympian to compete in a hijab, Muhammad has now created a Barbie of herself with a hijab.

The doll was introduced as the latest addition to Mattel's "Sheroes" line, which also features women such as Ava DuVernay, Gabby Douglas and Misty Copeland.

"I know that as an athlete I have larger legs - these strong legs that we use, especially fencers, to propel ourselves into lunges - and it was important for me to have my doll be as close to my likeness as possible". The new Barbie was introduced at the Glamour Women of the Year event in NY where Muhammad expressed her gratitude and emotions over the honor.

The importance of representing the first-ever hijab-wearing doll is not lost on Muhammad. So I wanted to have athletic toned legs for sure.

She also told reporters that as a child, she used to make hijabs for her Barbies out of tissue, and said that she hoped the new doll made in her likeness would inspired little girls of colour "to embrace what makes them unique". "I'm also really big into eyeliner", she said.
