Twitter Yanks Verification Badge from White Nationalists After Public Commotion

Some users who had verified badges taken off said the updated policy was not being applied consistently and highlighted accounts for disgraced celebrities who did not lose their badge. Jason Kessler, organizer of the far-right Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, lost his badge as well.

Now the social network has begun stripping the verification badge from the accounts of some users.

Twitter has suspended its account verification process for now and would not be accepting any new application for verified accounts, the company informed in a series of tweets on Wednesday night. "'We gave verified accounts visual prominence on the service which deepened this perception".

And the company added that it should have addressed the issue earlier.

Twitter's froze the blue tick scheme recently after realising that it was being used as a sign of endorsement or agreement which the company says, is not its objective.

Harassment, promoting or threatening physical violence, and sharing violent imagery were also included in the list of unacceptable behaviours.

The new guidelines are clear that the verified status will be withdrawn if the Twitter user's behaviour on and off the platform promoted hate and/or violence against others on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, religious affiliation, age, disability or disease.

Nevertheless, Twitter verification, if implemented and used in a right way, is a useful feature given the fact it helps users to differentiate between real handles and bot accounts, which create a lot of misinformation. The company revealed news about some new guidelines for verified accounts and wants all its verified accounts to follow these guidelines strictly. Richard Spencer complained in a tweet after the coveted blue checkmark was taken away from his handle.

It's still unclear exactly what Twitter verification entails, though.

The hate speech purge came after after Twitter introduced a new policy.
