Now, a little over two years after Musk's post, we get a first-person look on what it's like to experience dizzying acceleration in the planet's quickest production vehicle.

A workhorse truck and a new supercar are in the works for Tesla, after founder and CEO Elon Musk introduced his company's latest effort to widen the USA market for electric vehicles Thursday night. Tesla says the new Roadster will have 620 miles of range and a top speed of 250 mph (402 kph).

While Musk suggested that the Tesla Semi could effectively replace all diesel trucks, the haulage companies themselves are being a little more tentative in their expectations.

Irwin says truck companies will have to watch the market carefully, because tougher regulations on diesels or an improvement in charging infrastructure could make electric trucks more viable very quickly. It also comes with a million-mile guarantee on its powertrain.

At the same event, Tesla also introduced a new version of its first sports auto, the Roadster.

The company also plans to create a global network of solar-powered "megachargers" that could get the trucks back up to 400 miles of range after charging for only 30 minutes. Musk said it will be able to maintain a speed of 65 miles per hour while going up a 5 percent grade.

In addition, let's not forget Tesla has already teased the Model Y, a smaller crossover slated to be positioned below the Model X. It's due in 2019, though knowing Tesla, we're not so sure it will actually be launched before 2020. To reserve the base $200k Roadster, you'll need to make a $50,000 reservation now.

Company CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Semi, which is more aerodynamic than the Bugatti Chiron supercar ($2.6M USD), capable of going from 0-60mph with a full 80,000 pound load in 20 seconds. The company says that will translate into thousands of dollars in savings. "But charging can be a challenge and Tesla big rigs will cost far more than diesel trucks". Musk has said it should take about two years for the semi to go on sale. Inside the truck's cabin - tall enough for a driver to stand upright - there are two large touchscreen interfaces. In addition, he surprised everyone with the debut of an updated Tesla Roadster. These are just concept vehicles, really, but it's Tesla, and nothing is really ever as it seems.
