Signals were false hope for Argentine Sub

An Argentine national flag hangs at the entrance of the Argentine Naval Base Mar del Plata, where the missing submarine is based.

The U.S. government is supporting a request from the government of Argentina for global assistance to the ongoing search for the missing submarine and possible rescue opportunities once the vessel and crew are located.

In addition, the Submarine Rescue Command (URC) of the US Navy, based in San Diego, California, is deploying two independent rescue systems that can be used to support underwater search and rescue missions, depending on various oceanic factors, such as depth, current soil conditions and other safety considerations.

"It's dependent upon the last time they actually recharged their batteries, how long ago they refreshed the air, what's inside the submarine", former U.S. Navy diver and submariner William Craig Reed told CNN.

It was on a 10-day voyage from Argentina's southernmost port, Ushuaia, to the naval base at Mar del Plata, 250 miles (400km) south of Buenos Aires.

The Defence Ministry had said it detected seven failed satellite calls that may have come from the ARA San Juan, raising hopes that the 44 crew members could still be alive.

"The vessel surfaced and it reported a breakdown", Galeazzi said.

The calls "did not correspond to the satellite phone of the submarine San Juan", Balbi said.

The vessel disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the Argentine coast.

There has been no contact with the ARA San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric sub, since early Wednesday. Britain and Argentina fought a war in 1982 over the Falklands Islands, which are called the Malvinas in Argentina.

A possible signal has been detected from the submarine missing with 44 people on board. "The Falkland Islands government extends its honest hope that the submarine is found swiftly", the statement said.

"We are processing this information", Balbi said.

"Yesterday's news was something of a respite for us, to know that there is life", Claudio Rodriguez, the brother of a crew member, said on television channel A24 on Sunday morning. Argentine President Mauricio Macri met with family members there who anxiously waited for news about their loved ones.
