Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri is visiting Cairo to hold a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to address the crisis in his country after his sudden resignation, according to official sources.

Hariri, a longtime ally of Saudi Arabia, left Lebanon on November 3 and announced his shock resignation from the Saudi capital the next day, accusing Iran and the Hezbollah militant group backed by Tehran of destabilising his country.

Hariri arrived at Cairo International Airport, where he was received by Egypt's health minister, Lebanese ambassador to Cairo and Egypt's ambassador to Beirut, his press office said.

"As you know I have resigned and we will talk about this matter in Lebanon", Hariri said. Hariri was still expected to return to Lebanon overnight, and had himself said he'd be back in Beirut in time for Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Okab Saqr, a member of parliament for Hariri's Future Movement, said after Hariri's visit to France he would have "a small Arab tour" before traveling to Beirut.

Hariri is now in Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.
