A court in Milan has sentenced former Brazil forward Robinho to nine years in prison for sexual assault, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

The 33-year-old, who is now back playing football in Brazil, denied assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a Milan disco.

The Brazilian, 33, was found guilty of assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a disco in Milan in 2013, when he played for AC Milan.

He now has the right to appeal, with the sentence not enforced until the completion of this process.

It said: "On the news involving striker Robinho, in fact that happened a few years ago, we clarified that he already defended himself against the charges, saying he had no participation in the episode". Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.

As Robinho is a Brazilian national now residing in his home country, however, he is highly unlikely to face jail time for his offences.

Robinho failed to set the Premier League alight during his time with Manchester City

He's been with Atletico Mineiro since February of past year.

It added: "All legal steps are now being taken with regards to this decision by a court of first instance".

A lack of discipline, however, began to dog Robinho, and he was soon returning to Santos before a spell in Italy where the assault took place.

The Brazilian player was one of the most sought-after in 2005 when he made his big-money move from Santos to Real Madrid.
