Amazon Australia has confirmed it will officially launch today, ending weeks of speculation over whether it would hit the go button before Christmas.

One of Australia's leading retailers, Gerry Harvey of Harvey Norman told Sunrise that he's concerned Amazon will "break all the rules" and employ a predatory pricing strategy that means businesses such as his were financially incapable of matching their heavily discounted items.

USA internet retail giant is offering millions of products from well-known Australian brands, as well as small and medium-sized Australian businesses selling on Amazon Marketplace.

Customer orders will be processed at Amazon's new fulfilment centre in Dandenong South.

Amazon will offer free delivery to customers that purchase its own devices on orders above $49, and will have one-day delivery in some areas.

Amazon said it expects to launch Prime shipping benefits in Australia in mid-2018. Still, it's a huge blow to our $16 billion retail sector.

Amazon has already secured a rich range of Australian and global brands (including Bonds, Sol-Sana, as well as Puma, Lego, L'Oreal; and Sonos) available to consumers as part of the local marketplace launch. They will be shipped from a warehouse in Melbourne.

In 2016, more than 100,000 small businesses across the globe achieved sales of over US$100,000 through selling on Amazon.
