Conyers To Retire Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

Embattled Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has announced Tuesday that he is retiring and has endorsed his son, John Conyers III to run for his seat.

In an amended statement released to 7 Action News last week, Conyers said, "I expressly and vehemently denied the allegations made against me, and continue to do so".

When asked if Congress should "open the books" and share the names of all the members who are responsible for $7 million in sexual harassment lawsuits paid, Conyers said, "My answer is a strong, unequivocal, yes".

But amid a drumbeat of allegations he groped or sexual harassed women who worked for him, he faced growing calls to resign from colleagues in the House, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Shortly thereafter, the RNC renewed their financial support of Roy Moore's campaign.

The reports cite conversations with Conyers' grandson, Ian Conyers. The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.

Conyers was rushed to a hospital just as a former aide broke her silence for the first time and spoke on the record about her accusations Conyers sexually harassed her.

Rep. John Conyers' attorney is expected to make an announcement later this morning. Williams said. "We are saying, 'Hell no.' We want him to run for as long as his health allows".

Conyers said he did not feel as if he was given due process regarding the allegations, but that it doesn't come as a shock to him, having gone through this with others and worked in the area of constitutional issues and due process in particular for many years.

Yemen's Saleh Calls for 'New Page' in Relations with Saudi-led Coalition
Saleh ruled Yemen from its unification in 1990 until he resigned under pressure in 2012, ceding power to his then vice-president Hadi.

"I stand with my uncle in terms of his belief of no specific wrongdoing", he said.

The elder Conyers, however, continued to deny the allegations leveled against him.

Conyers' attorney Arnold Reed tweeted Monday that he and the congressman will appear on the 102.7 FM Mildred Gaddis radio show on Tuesday at 10:15 announce the Detroit Democrat's decision on whether he plans to stay in Congress.

Another victim of Conyers has come forward.

News of Conyers' departure comes amid a firestorm of sexual misconduct allegations made against other members of Congress, including Sen.

Republican congressman Joe Barton separately announced last week he would not seek re-election after a nude photograph of him taken while he was separated from his wife circulated online.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers.

Conyers, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who was first elected to the House in 1964, stepped down last month as the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. He will now be leaving the seat he's held since 1965.
