Flu widespread in OH, hospitalizations reported in Clark County

An estimated 5 to 20 percent of people are expected to get the flu this year, depending on the severity of the season. The updated practice parameters, which were written by American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Food Allergy Committee Chair Matthew Greenhawt, are based on dozens of studies that suggest the tiny amounts of egg protein found in a flu shot are not enough to trigger a risky reaction, even in people with a severe allergy. However, a national panel of experts announced on Tuesday that egg allergies should not prevent anyone from getting a flu shot, and that adverse reactions to the vaccine are no more likely among those with allergies compared to everyone else.

However, doctors said she might want to reconsider, especially with the flu already widespread.

Previous year flu activity didn't reach this level statewide until mid-January, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Vaccination against flu can help reduce hospital admissions in this age group and help stop the spread of flu in the community.

"What usually happens is that it takes two to three weeks for the vaccine to take hold, so either they came in with the flu and they got the influenza vaccine, or they got the flu during the time, while they were waiting for the antibodies to respond", Wu said.

"One redeeming quality about egg allergy is that the majority of it is outgrown at some point in childhood, with a very small proportion of individuals retaining that into adulthood".
