For India, the data released by Facebook showed that from January 2017-June 2017, there were a total of 9,853 requests and 13,752 user accounts requested.

The latest report has revealed the number of data requests is on the up, with substantial increases from authorities in the US, UK, France and Germany.

The government made 32,716 requests for data from the company in the first half of 2017, with 57 per cent of those requests coming with demands for confidentiality, the company said in its semi-annual Transparency Report.

The number of requests raised by 25.7 percent in first half of 2017 from the 26,014 made in the second half of 2016, said Facebook. H1 saw a huge leap in data restrictions, up to 28,036 from 6,944 in H2 2016, but most of this can be traced back to a single event, a school shooting in Mexico which resulting in Facebook restricting 20,506 pieces of content. The majority of content restricted was alleged to violate local laws relating to defamation of religion and hate speech added the company. For the second half of 2016, content was restricted only around 7000 times, suggesting a fourfold increase in the takedown requests, notes The Verge.

Worldwide requests for Facebook user data now significantly outnumber those received by Google, which recorded 48,941 requests concerning 83,345 accounts in first half of 2017. So, we scrutinize each request for legal sufficiency, no matter which country is making the request, and challenge those that are deficient or overly broad.

Facebook also published five previously undisclosed National Security Letters (NSLs) in its report today.

Facebook suggested these shutdowns can create barriers for businesses and prevent people from sharing and communicating with their family and friends.
