Ryanair says hopes to operate German flights as normal during strike

On Tuesday, IMPACT expressed their disappointment at a lack of official Ryanair recognition of trade unions despite the airline having publicly committed to doing so and issued an ultimatum that included the threat of strike action if Ryanair did not agree to proposals by noon today (Thursday).

In a statement after the meeting, IMPACT - which includes the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association - said: "The union reiterated its position that its mandate for strike action can be implemented, after the required notice is given, in the absence of a timely agreement".

Ryanair said the strike is "unjustified" given that the sides have agreed to meet again on January 5, adding that the pilot council which attended the talks had not been elected by its own staff and contained one person who is now in litigation with the company.

Ryanair has written to its German pilots this afternoon asking them to work as normal tomorrow to avoid disrupting the travel plans of thousands of German passengers during Christmas week.

Germany's Cockpit (VC) said Ryanair broke off the first scheduled talks this week because it objected to two of the five union members at the table, which it said proved the company had "no desire to enter into constructive negotiations".

Bellew described the action as a "bolt from the blue" after good dialogue with the union at a meeting on Wednesday and said he would consider working with other unions instead of VC.

"Ryanair's public offer to conduct negotiations with VC can only be classified as a further publicity stunt".

"We will be engaging with Ryanair company council, which is made up of our Ryanair pilots, and we will be developing our agenda", she told RTÉ's News at One.

Update 4.35pm: Ryanair is facing a four hour strike by pilots in Germany three days before Christmas.

It agreed to meet the union in Frankfurt on January 5 to "progress and resolve these issues, which Ryanair expects will lead to a collective labour agreement (CLA) for Ryanair's pilots in Germany."?

IMPACT Assistant General Secretary Ashley Connolly confirmed the receipt of correspondence that "accepts and recognises the union for collective bargaining purposes".

Those were the first since Ryanair had offered on Friday to recognise trade unions, prompting the suspension of strike action planned over the busy festive period - when many travellers head overseas for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The airline said it had tabled proposals on pay and conditions, procedures and dispute resolution for Irish-based pilots, and "looks forward to concluding an early agreement on these issues with its Irish Ryanair pilot company council".
