Four killed after Moscow bus drives into underpass

The crash happened on one of the busiest streets in Moscow near the Slavyanksy Boulevard metro station, Reuters reported.

There were also unconfirmed reports that some 15 people had been injured. The bus went off the road and onto the steps leading into the passageway.

Photos and video from the scene showed the bus on the steps leading into the underground passageway.

Sobyanin himself arrived at the scene, telling journalists he had ordered a full inspection of the entire Moscow bus fleet. Witnesses told RT the vehicle suddenly accelerated, speeding across the sidewalk and down the stairs.

The Interior Ministry's Moscow division said in a statement that considered causes of the incident include "failure of the driver to control the vehicle or a malfunction of the vehicle".

Pedestrians and passengers on the bus were among those killed, Moscow police said. Police were questioning the driver.

Monday is an ordinary working day in Russian Federation, where Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated on January 7.

The driver, who has been detained for questioning, has been working for the bus company for 17 years and received his license more than 30 years ago.

Mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, took to Twitter to express his condolences to the families and friends of the victim.
