Himachal Pradesh CM: Dhumal said not in race for top job

The defeat of the BJP's chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal from Sujanpur opened up the race for the top post in Himachal Pradesh.

During the meeting, Mr Thakur's name was proposed by two-time chief minister Mr Dhumal and seconded by Mr Nadda and another two-time chief minister Shanta Kumar.

Thakur's name was finalised by the core committee of the party in the presence of observers from Delhi after much deliberations amid name of Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda also making rounds for the coveted post.

Elaborate security arrangements are being made for the ceremony and the prime minister is likely to address people at the Ridge.

"Former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal proposed Jairam Thakur to be elected as the Legislature party leader".

The other main contender for the post of CM was Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, but there was no consensus on his name.

Thakur is a graduate from Government College, Mandi. Thakur, who is five-time MLA from Seraj in Mandi district, has the backing of the RSS and a section of BJP MLAs in Himachal. He did his post-graduation from Panjab University in Chandigarh and chose to join politics when he was in his 20s. 52-year-old Thakur had earlier been the party's state unit chief and a minister in a government headed by Dhumal.

Thakur, the fourth of five siblings, lost his maiden assembly election in 1993. In 1998, he was given a ticket again and won decisively and went on to repeat the feat four more times on the trot from the same constituency. He was also the state unit president between 2006 and 2009.

Known for his integrity, Thakur enjoys a good rapport with his voters and the remoteness and hard topography notwithstanding, got 56 of 58 panchayats in the Seraj constituency connected by road.

The BJP took nearly a week to decide on the Chief Minister after its chief ministerial candidate Dhumal lost the election.
