The measure targets two senior officials involved with the development of North Korea's ballistic missile program: Kim Jong Sik and Ri Pyong Chol.

The sanctions follow a U.N. Security Council resolution adopted Friday that imposes new, harsh sanctions in response to the country's November 28 ballistic missile launch. The US Treasury revealed that the two officials sanctioned are Ri Pyong-chol and Kim Jong-sik.

The North Korean officials added to the USA sanctions list were identified only as Kim Jong-sik and Ri Pyong-chol.

Under the new sanctions, any property or interests in property of the two men within USA jurisdiction are blocked, and transactions by US persons involving the designated persons are generally prohibited, the statement said. Using solid fuel makes missiles easier to hide before launch. It said the move was part of a "maximum pressure campaign". Ri and Kim accompanied North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during the launch of the Hwasong-14 on July 4th and 28th, as well as September's launch of the Hwasong-12, which flew over Japan.

Lavrov "once again highlighted that it is unacceptable to exacerbate tensions around the Korean peninsula with Washington's aggressive rhetoric toward Pyongyang and increasing military preparations in the region", it said.

North Korea has been hit with many sanctions in recent months.

Under his supervision, the program has been transformed from a slew of failed rocket launches to the successful testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles that can be armed with nuclear weapons and are capable of reaching the US mainland.

The Trump administration pressed ahead with yet another round of sanctions on two key North Korea leaders, as it moves to cripple any financial ties that might aid the rogue nation's nuclear weapons program.

In a statement published on Sunday by the state-run KCNA news agency, the North Korean foreign ministry denounced the new United Nations sanctions as "an act of war".

The acquisition of those engines may have been accompanied by a North Korea focus on Ukraine, and alleged attempts to steal missile secrets from a Ukrainian facility.
