The police chief said that on receiving specific information about two to three terrorists hiding in the area, the security forces launched an operation to either nab or neutralise them.

All the three JeM militants were also killed in the security forces' counter attack. The encounter continued till early morning, and one JeM cadre was identified as Noor Mohammad Tantray.

The 47-year-old Chhota Noora was reportedly the "chief architect" of a militant attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) camp outside the Srinagar International Airport in October.

Sources said Tantray was also found to be involved in the grenade attack on State PWD Minister Naeem Akhtar's cavalcade in Tral on September 21.

"No one would suspect him to be a terrorist and that is why Jaish recruited him as an over-ground worker", a police officer told NDTV.

Hailing from Tral area of south Kashmir, Tantray's death is seen as a blow to the terror group as he was the key man in reviving the JeM in south and central Kashmir.

Tantray alias Noor Trali was during a cordon and search operation in Samboora village of Pampore in Pulwama district, yesterday.

Two of his accomplices, believed to be foreign terrorists, managed to escape under the cover of darkness when the encounter broke out at Samboora village in Pulwama district in South Kashmir, they said, adding that the two would be tracked down soon. 50 Rashtriya Rifles, J&K Police and 110 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been carried out this operation.

Noora was arrested in Delhi in 2003 and sentenced to life by a Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court in 2011.

Noor was shifted to Srinagar jail and was released on parole in 2015 after which he reported joined JeM to lead the militants. He had been giving sleepless nights to security forces in Jammu and Kashmir for the last six months.

Subsequently, he jumped parole and rejoined the JeM, becoming one of its top commanders.
