Liverpool have agreed to sign Netherlands global Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a reported world record fee for a defender, the two English Premier League clubs announced on Wednesday.

Liverpool said they had agreed a deal with both Southampton FC and the player that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on New Year's Day.

The Dutchman had been expected to join the Reds last summer after he handed in a transfer request.

But the move fell through when Liverpool were forced to make a public apology after being accused of making an illegal approach for the player. "Southampton could have named any price they wanted and Liverpool were desperate", the former England worldwide told BBC Sport.

Two other major Premier League clubs, leaders Manchester City and champions Chelsea, had also been reported to have sought Van Dijk's signature but Liverpool won the race.

The transfer fee of 70 million pounds ($94 million) could reach 75 million pounds ($100 million) depending on Van Dijk's achievements at Liverpool. "The club wishes Virgil well in his future when the deal is completed on January 1st 2018".
