The husband of a 22-year-old woman found dead on the basement steps of her home in Brooklyn after a neighbor responded to the cries of a 3-year-old girl is in custody and charges against him are pending, police said Thursday.

"Witnesses heard an argument and something falling down the stairs", a police source said.

Most damning were revelations that NYPD cops had been called to the Brooklyn home earlier that Wednesday to check on Wells who told 911 she was "scared" of her husband because he was 'acting amusing, ' according to police sources cited by the nypost. The NYPD worked with New Rochelle police to take Barry Wells into custody. The caller told police they heard a woman yell "help me, he's going to kill me", 1010 WINS reported.

Hours later, husband Barry Wells was caught by police.

"We're conducting an internal investigation to look at the actions of those two officers and quite frankly everybody involved in the response to that incident", NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said at an unrelated press conference on Thursday. Police said she had bruising on her neck and other signs of trauma.

The detained man is not the father of Wells' 2-year-old, according to family members.

Meanwhile, friends and strangers took to Tonie Wells' Facebook page after her death to offer their condolences.

This latest incident is the second time officers responded to a domestic incident at the Wells' house.
