Barely four minutes after the emergency call, around 200 firefighters arrived in three dozen vehicles at 5:30am (1030 GMT) at a three-floor, red-brick building close to the Bronx Zoo.

The massive fire comes less than a week after another fire, caused by a child playing with a stove, killed at least 12 people, including several children.

At least 16 people were injured after a major fire broke at an apartment building in New York's Bronx area today. The fire is believed to have started on a furniture store on the first floor.

There are twelve apartments in the building.
