Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio was sacked Sunday after his third year when the impressive turnaround job he engineered for his hometown team collapsed with a disappointing six-win season.

According to Jerry McDonald of the Mercury News, Gruden said, "Well, I think I am being considered, yes".

Gruden, 55, had a 40-28 record in his four seasons with the Raiders with two playoff appearances before being traded to Tampa Bay after the 2001 season.

Gruden declined to specifically comment about the Raiders this past weekend, saying "there is no news to report". This year, he talked openly about a return to the sidelines and there was speculation - primarily wishful thinking from University of Tennessee fans - that he would leave ESPN to coach the Volunteers.

When Harbaugh was sacked by the 49ers following the 2014 season, Morton moved to the Saints. Yet, following Oakland's 6-10 finish, including an bad regression on offense, owner Mark Davis apparently will go all in to pursue Gruden with his team just two years away from moving to Las Vegas. I take a lot every year from coaches, some others.

The Raiders' six-win dropoff was the second-largest in franchise history from one season to the next. But again, Gruden has not coached since 2008. This time, it feels real, as he could the Raiders' next head coach in the coming days. Right now, the Raiders sit at 6-9, with three straight losses, have already been eliminated from playoff contention and are headed to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in the regular season finale. Morton was also an offensive assistant for the Raiders from 2002-04. What have they got?

"He felt he needed a change, and I told him how much I appreciated the opportunity he gave me". "I hope I'm a candidate".
