Senators Refer Dossier Author to DOJ in Criminal Referral

Sen. Chuck Grassley, of Iowa, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, and Lindsey Graham, of SC, sent a short letter along with a classified memo to FBI director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein saying they believed former British spy Christopher Steele violated a federal law in relation to statements he made about the distribution of claims from the 35-page dossier. Graham is the chairman of a Judiciary subcommittee that is investigating the Russian meddling.

Congressional panels, including the Senate Intelligence Committee, set out to investigate US intelligence agency allegations that Russian Federation conducted a campaign of hacking and disinformation to undermine USA democracy in the election, but some of the bipartisanship has eroded. "I don't take lightly making a referral for criminal investigation", Sen.

Senate Republicans refer the author of the Trump dossier to the DOJ for criminal investigation : In the first official criminal referral to come out of the Senate investigation into Trump's Russian Federation ties, Republican Sens.

The statement from Graham and Grassley goes on to say that the referral "does not pertain to the veracity of claims contained in the dossier" and that it "is not meant to be an allegation of a crime".

This has left Democrats in the unenviable position of arguing that the racist authoritarian who has repeatedly misled Congress in sworn testimony - and, apparently, tried to sabotage his own Federal Bureau of Investigation director on the president's behalf - must be allowed to continue running the Justice Department, for the sake of our democracy.

Steele had no immediate comment.

In recommending a criminal investigation into Steele, Grassley and Graham aren't calling the contents of his dossier into question but rather claiming there's evidence he lied to the FBI about contacts with journalists. However, CNN's reporting shows a number of pieces of intelligence separate from the dossier raised concerns among U.S. national security officials and propelled an investigation.

On Friday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of CT, a Democrat on the Judiciary committee, called the move a partisan effort "aimed at someone who reported wrongdoing, rather than committed it". The meeting is now under scrutiny of Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the investigation. "Getting to the bottom of what happened remains a top priority for me, as I hope it does for everyone on the Judiciary Committee".

Democrats allege that Republicans are concentrating on the Steele memo as a way to distract from the ongoing probes into Russian interference in the 2016 election. "But. I feel obliged to pass that information along to the Justice Department for appropriate review." Sen.

The letter makes reference to a "Top Secret" memo that they said relates to "certain communications between Christopher Steele and multiple USA news outlets" regarding the "dossier".

The Trump dossier, sometimes called the Steele memo, contains numerous unverified allegations against President Trump, including that Russian intelligence had a video of him in a compromising sexual situation.

The unsubstantiated dossier was put together during the election campaign and was partially funded by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democrats.
