Green Bay will promote director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst to general manager, NFL Media first reported. Gutekunst was in the running to replace Ted Thompson in Green Bay, so it can not be ruled out that he will be promoted to general manager. He will replace Ted Thompson, who previously served as the team's GM for 13 seasons before transitioning to a different role within the organization.

Gutekunst was introduced to the Packers as an intern in the team's scouting department in the summe rof 1997, and was hired as a full-time employee by Ron Wolf on December 30, 1998.

This comes after the 43-year-old Gutekunst interviewed for the Houston Texans' vacant GM job.

Gutekunst has spent 19 years working in the Packers' personnel department.

Titans rally to beat Chiefs in AFC wild card game
Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce left the game late in the first half after a hit by Titans' Johnathan Cyprien . Mariota then came down with the ball and dove in for a touchdown, sneaking the ball in past the left front pylon.

Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie turns down interview for Packers job
The team went 30-34 in his four seasons, making the playoffs twice and winning one game before retiring again. Gibbs returned to coaching in 2004 and his second stint in Washington wasn't almost as effective as his first.

The bigger news what that means back in Green Bay. Hiring an in-house personnel guy who aligns with his philosophy and a similar approach that Thompson took is a good thing for a coach who was given a quiet one-year extension in the middle of the last season.

The other two were vice president of football administration Russ Ball and director of football operations Eliot Wolf.

McCarthy is also filling several assistant coaching vacancies, including both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions.
